What is a calling? I have heard so many people speak of this calling but never really understood how God can call you to do something. In the past I have been led by the Holy Spirit in decision making while in prayer but to be honest it took dedication, solitude, being wrapped in the word and most importantly, being hagnos in my thoughts.
I have sensed a calling for several years now but that’s just it, I sensed something but was never clear as to what that something is. I once thought I was to write a FAQ for God book. I was clear in finding these answers by searching Gods word and seeking wisdom from Godly people but had the arrogance of being a definitive author to compile such work. I will never forget sitting down to write and after a few questions were answered I got on the subject on the age of accountability. I prayed for wisdom, with bible in hand I started to type an answer… Suddenly as if I was in one of those old war movies being tortured, my eyes started to burn. It felt like someone was touching the tip of a soldering iron to my pupil. It was unbearable.
Over the years I have learned not to ask why but what. What are you telling me Lord? Immediately Luke 6:41-42 came to mind. Who am I to answer a question that God alone knows the answer to? I didn’t feel so Spirit led to write this FAQ for God book anymore after that. I gave up…
Being a man who struggles with the flesh I have had personal experiences with the addiction to pornography. I felt led to bring awareness and solutions to this problem using the bible like a prescription to cure a common cold. The common cold can be managed by medicine but there are many factors to consider such as what you put into your body, whether or not you exercise and do you believe that this medicine will help your cold.
Battling sin is very similar; you just can’t write a prescription and expect the patient to be well. There are also many factors to consider such as what kind of a lifestyle are you living? Do you watch movies and TV shows that are conducive to the temptation of this struggle? Are you reading Gods word daily and dedicate a time for solitude to reflect and listen for His soft voice? Do you believe that God will help?
To be honest, I couldn’t answer yes to all the above questions… I no longer felt led to continue this venture either.
Now here is where I may ruffle a few feathers. I don’t believe God has a specific "job" He wants "everyone" to do. God speaks to us in Colossians 3:23: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men"
God doesn’t say that He has specific job for you to perform, he says to do the absolute best you can at what ever it is that you do. While your days are numbered it is up to you handle the itinerary. That does not mean God has no say so in the matter. If you seek His guidance and wisdom first before making the decision, you will receive and answer but understand this; you work on His timetable, not your own.
What if we all got ordained, became pastors and shared the Gospel by preaching in a big church every Sunday and Wednesday? Is this in align with Gods will? Do you think God set into motion for you to become a pastor? I for one don’t know that answer but I do know this: if God wants you to become a pastor there is nothing you can do about it, you will be a pastor, eventually. But does God want everyone to become a pastor? Personally, I don’t think so.
What good would it be to have the best doctors all in one Hospital? What if you are too poor to make the drive to that great hospital? What if you don’t have insurance? What if you are afraid of doctors?
It may sound ridiculous to you but these are legitimate reasons people do not go to church. Some people can’t afford the gas to get to church. Some people don’t know anyone in a church and just won’t go uninvited. MANY people have been to church but have had bad encounters and swore to never return. I should know, I am one of them. So what about all those people who do not go to church? How will they come to know Christ or learn to walk in Christ’s footsteps?
You are needed right where you are! God loves to take the simplest sinner and use us to glorify Him. You don’t have to preach behind the stained glass windows to work for God. He needs you at the office or behind the wrench or raising the kids at home. He needs you in the field!
Glorify God right where you are. Live a life that shows what is inside of you and people WILL seek the source wherever you are. I mentioned that I was one of those that would never go to church. If it were not for an ordinary person like you, I would never know and love the wonderful church I am a member. No matter how good the preacher is. I would never have been there to hear him. God bless that ordinary person for ministering to me on my level!
I gave up on the FAQ for God project, I put the help for pornography addiction on a back burner and I am going to be the best darn computer guy I can be at work. I will seek Gods wisdom and favor in doing my job and I believe He will be glorified through me in one way or another just not the way I may plan out.
I do have a new project but this time I won’t try and conquer the world for God. I want to do this so I can grow in my walk with Christ and perhaps become a Godlier man for my family. It’s called project Hagnos. I am going to try and write a daily devotional to coincide with the New Testament written from the perspective of an ordinary guy with and ordinary life. I will chronicle this project on http://www.hagnos.org/ as my daily walk with Christ. I am certain I won’t work on it daily but I hope to see it through to the end and come out with a book I can give my kids.
